Refreshing Wine Coolers and Cocktails

With summer in full swing, you are looking for ideas for refreshing wine drinks. I’ve found some that will delight you for a warm summer evening, or refresh your guests at a summer party. Wine coolers and cocktails are light-weight when it comes to the alcohol content, plus they are low in calories. Such a nice added bonus for you.

Wine coolers are made very simply, with few ingredients. Usually something as simple as fruit juice with several ounces of wine added in, then garnished with a piece of matching or complimentary fruit. You can also add sparkling water or lemon-line soda to make a wine cooler. Either way, you have a refreshing and light drink.

Wine cocktails, but their very nature, involve more liquor. But, these can still be refreshing. I found a fun one for you from Food and Wine.com. It’s called an Ice Wine Martini. It does involve a bit more work, but so worth it.

Start with about 10 green grapes per serving. Puree these in a blender, add 2 ounces of Ice wine and 2 ounces of vodka. Strain through a tea strainer, then shake with ice. Strain into a martini glass and garnish with 2 whole or halved green grapes stuck on a cocktail toothpick.

Wait, what is Ice wine? It’s a very sweet dessert wine that is made from grapes that have been frozen on the vine. This causes the grape sugars to concentrate. For a drink that’s not quite so sweet, try a sweet white wine in place of Ice wine. You will end up with a refreshing way to enjoy a wine cocktail.
